TORONTO, ON (February 18, 2019) - A new apparel line believes we need to talk about mental health differently. One in Five Apparel designs simple but powerful conversation starters on mental illness that don’t label or define the wearer. Launching online on Monday, February 18, One in Five’s initial collection brings awareness to the fact that one in five people will experience mental illness in a given year. Through its design and its online resources, One in Five Apparel empowers the wearer to change the conversation on mental illness and reflect on our preconceived notions of what mental illness looks like. To further amplify its message, 10% of all proceeds go towards The Living With Scholarship.
Having lived with mental illness for nearly a decade, CEO and Founder, Megan te Boekhorst, understands the impact misinformation and discrimination have. “With our first collection, I hope others with similar stories will feel represented and less alone, without being judged or stigmatized,” said te Boekhorst. “And I hope that those without mental illness can begin to recognize how we all share common experiences in regards to our mental health.”
When one in five people will experience mental illness in a given year, it touches all of our lives in one way or another. And yet, those who live with mental illness still face discrimination and judgement from strangers, the media, and those close to them. This creates a major barrier to recognizing signs of mental illness in ourselves and accessing treatment when we need it.
